Meet the Earl at Midnight Midnight Meetings Gina Conkle 9781402294273 Books

I have read through the night, I just could not put down this book! I don't even know where to begin. A commoner is brought to an Inn at midnight by her theiving stepfather. In the room are several men, all large, except one is rather huge, with a cape wrapped around his face. It turns out, he is the Earl of Greenwich, and Lydia has been brought here to be taken by him, in payment of the money her stepfather, and stepbrother have stolen from him. This book is so well written, the characters are like a great movie playing across your mind, you can see, and understand them do clearly. Their scars, fears, and hopes. I have read three really good books this year, and I must put this one at the top! Gina Conkle is hugely underappreciated! Please do yourself a favor and look her up on Amazon, Facebook, and Goodreads! I highly recommend today! Thanks! I know you will enjoy!

Meet the Earl at Midnight Midnight Meetings Gina Conkle 9781402294273 Books Reviews

The story opens with a mysterious stranger in a ramshackle dockside tavern on a dark and stormy night. The perfect opening for a romance with a headstrong female with Cinderella tendencies. Nicely done! Readers will savor the twists and turns in the plot and the colorful characters caught in them. Enjoy! I did!
This is what I hope for each time I buy a new E-book but rarely find. This book sucked me in from the very beginning & I haven't been able to put it down till I finished it! Needless to say, I've not gotten anything done today! But that's OK-I'll always make an exception when it comes to a really good book. While I can see why it's been compared to "Beauty & the Beast", the plot line is nothing like that story. I'd even go so far as to say that story felt different than most historical romance novels. I love this genre, but really, there's only a couple of plots that are written about over & over again. But this story had some refreshing twists that was a nice change from those typical plots. I highly recommend it and I think you'll love the characters as much as I did! But I have to give fair warning-once you start reading you won't want to put it down (it starts in the middle of the action!). I don't write reviews very often but I had to give the author a standing ovation! Very well done! I look forward to reading more of your books in the future!
Not going to divulge spoiler's, but the beginning was very interesting. There is also alot of humor in this story, with the banter with the H and h, mostly coming from our h.

There isn't a cliffhanger - yea, there is HEA, that was looking doubtful, one mildly described lovemaking within marriage. The romance builds slowly, but you knew there was a connection.

Not a lot of action, some twists that were interesting, and colorful secondary character's. I personally think the book is priced to high at over $6. It is good, but many more interesting author's/stories out there that are more reasonably priced. (ljb)
This is an enjoyable addition to the historical romance genre, and one that I heartily recommend. The book is all about tension sexual tension between the lead characters, which is not fulfilled until late in the book, and tension between societal roles and duties versus dreams and desires. The Earl is a recluse, and so much of the story takes place in a private setting that allows relationships and events to happen that would not be possible in the social setting of the time, and as such, makes it easier for the reader to accept what is happening. The characters and setting were appealing to me. The story moves along with different pacing at different times, and the point of view shifts in ways that were sometimes jarring, as was the frequent description of characters crossing their arms in front of their chests. Those were the minor issues that kept it from being a five-star review.
This book certainly sounded intriguing, and it was until about halfway through the book, and then it just started to go downhill for me. I think if it had more romance, and I'm not talking about you know what, but just those parts in romance books that make you feel the heat between the two with even just a glance across the room from each other. It seemed to be building to that, but just slowly deflated. The love scene, happened at about 85% through the book, was quite heated (I liked it), but I could have gave some of that up for more heat between them in and throughout the rest of the book.

Overall, I will certainly read her next book. I am interested about the housekeeper, Claire, who suddenly disappeared in the middle of the book - most intriguing. I am also interested in Jonas' story, which is the earl's good friend and man of business in this book.
Beauty and the Beast theme is a favorite of a mine so when I read the synopsis of this book I knew I had to read it. Edward is scarred and is happy being basically a recluse working with his plants however he needs a wife and heir. Lydia is betrothed to Edward without her knowledge which of course infuriates her. She is a strong person and is not about to sit back and let her life be dictated to by her stepfather. However she agrees, reluctantly, to go along with the betrothal. I really enjoyed the witty banter between Edward and Lydia. Both gave as good as they got.Their relationship was a beautiful part of the story. They grew to respect and then love each other - it was not a love at first sight so when they realized their love it was a big smile moment. Looking forward to more of Gina's books.
Another reviewer wrote "plodding." That's exactly right. Although I wasn't hooked by the sample, I went ahead and bought the book and deleted it from my account at 15%. It IS plodding. Bloated. I hated that everything was over-described, yet phrases repeated themselves over and over. "Snapped to attention" was used at least half a dozen times in that first 15%. I can suspend some disbelief a little for romance novels, but the language and attitudes in Meet the Earl was in another universe from even loose accuracy. Finally, the heroine was weird and abrasive, the hero was stiff and robotic. At 15% I couldn't read another page.

Ugh. I RARELY don't finish books. This was awful. I want my $6.00 back.
