This is a crazy book - by that I mean, it is amusing and wacky! I really enjoyed it and was constantly surprised by the plot twists. Tom Sharpe is at his best in this satirical take on just about everything British (including war.) It is the story of a couple in a small town in England and just how far they will go to get one up on each other. It is also about the gardener their estate has inherently employed, and just how far he will go to keep a highway from being built through this estate. It is a very easy read. I would highly recommend it.

Tom Sharpe's characters always put a smile on my face! Love having his books in my Library to pick up whenever I am feeling down or gloomy.
Unbelievably Funny. You'll laugh so hard you'll cry!
Such a joy to absorb in this , sometimes far too crazy word that we now exist in. Smile , giggle and let the fun shine through.
The first of Tom Sharpe's books which I have read and probably the funniest comedy I've ever read. Will be investigating some more books from this author. Recommended.
Genius writer, English wit at it's finest. I loved it!
I'm an avid reader of Sharpe's books and Blott is up there with the best of them. However, I feel that his Wilt character trumps them all. My advice to anyone introducing themselves to Sharpe's novels would be to do the Wilt series (in proper sequence) first and then his other novels. They are all hilarious and achingly funny. If you have read and liked one of his novels you will like them all
This is vintage Sharpe the bumbling bureaucrats, corrupt politicians, the heroic defenders of tradition, the weird characters and their perversions, the mayhem. In this book the bad cause espoused by the bureaucrats is the building of highways through beautiful landscapes. The formula repeats itself but it's an enjoyable formula.
