Vampires Under the Hammer eBook Charles E Butler
The vast library of Hammer Films’ vampire sagas is opened wide by Charles E. Butler in his third critical opus. He takes on not only the entire Dracula series which made Christopher Lee a household name, but also the Carmilla Karnstein trilogy inaugurated by Ingrid Pitt, and the company’s second-tier entries, leading the readers through another nostalgic tour of the horrors of yesteryear and reflecting on their influences on subsequent vampire treatments, as well as their own remarkable staying power. Many of the now-familiar vampire traits—the blazing red eyes, the sharp protruding fangs, the explicit emphasis on blood, and even the sexual undertone to the relationships between vampires and victims—were made such largely by the British studio, perhaps even more than by their American precursors, the Universal Horrors, whose own vampire excursions often felt the weight of heavier demands of censorship. Each chapter is punctuated with exhaustive research, historical analysis, personal recollections, and interesting fun facts. There isn’t a Hammer devotee around who doesn’t know of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, but how many are aware that the nightclub setting in DRACULA, A.D. 1972 once featured the Beatles as regular performers? Or that Peter Sallis, Wallace from the WALLACE AND GROMIT series, was one of the heavies in TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA? Tidbits of information such as these, especially for the film collectors and fans, add to the overall appreciation of the movies.
As in his previous books, Butler also shows off his equally-impressive artistic talents with character shots, offering new renditions of iconic images of Cushing, Lee, Pitt and more, which we all have etched in our memories.
VAMPIRES UNDER THE HAMMER is an enriching showcase of an essential era of the vampire film. So sit back, turn the page, and lose yourself in a world of foreboding castles, terrified populaces, and the bloodthirsty noblemen and noblewomen at the center of it all.

Vampires Under the Hammer eBook Charles E Butler Reviews
A solid effort by the offer and worth the cover price. If you like Hammer horror like I do then you will love this book!
A good lecture for a rainy an cloudy weekend, it was short an interesting stuff
Why would you read a book like this? For me, there are two reasons 1) to get more insight into a reality that is attractive but vague and 2) to get another taste of that reality. In this case, the reality is the Hammer series of vampire movies, and this book gives me those two things. The author covers all the Hammer vampire films, giving a synopsis of each as well as a cast list and background information. He also presents some hand-drawn pictures from the film's which I thought were quite good. I fully enjoyed the book and recommend it to all those who, like me, sat slack-jawed in front of late night airings of the classic Hammer movies.
Vampires Under the Hammer. This book by Charles Butler is a loving homage to Hammer films and their Dracula /vampire films. This book is a must have for any fan mainly because it seems to me Charles has accumulated every piece of interesting trivia regarding Hammer's vampire film saga. For instance, there was another actor considered for the part of the monster in Curse of Frankenstein. Chris Lee almost ventured to America to make films because tall actors were in demand. One of the highlights of the book for me is the story regarding Peter Cushing, who was unable to do a good Dutch accent for the part of Van Helsing this ended up changing the whole concept of the depiction of Van Helsing in cinema. With every film Mr. Butler includes a finely rendered drawing from the film .His renderings for the book are a delight for us horror film fans and pop art fans.
His critique of each film is accurate and despite his love for Hammer films he points out their flaws in the latter films (7 Golden Vampires has a hilarious flaw that Mr. Butler discusses in depth. Give this book a read and you'll want to pop in a dvd from Hammer studios and you'll realize how much more fun films used to be.
Being a very long time Hammer fan and having read almost every available book on the studio, I always enjoy finding a new one. Having grown up in the 60's and 70's, there where quite a few books and magazines on horror films, but often the information on Hammer was either dismissive or just plain wrong. Thankfully this was addressed by well researched fanzines like Little Shoppe of Horrors that treated Hammer with the respect due. Mr. Butler has obvious affection for the subject, but sadly does get a number of basic facts just wrong. Take for example one that's repeated a few times in the book when referring to producer and writer Anthony Hind's screen credits, he seems to not know that John Elder is Anthony Hind's pen name. Also, one of Hammer's most well known vampire tales is Kiss of the Vampire, yet he gets the name of Noel Willman's vampire leader wrong calling him Count Ravna instead of Dr. Ravna.
The structure of the book follows the familiar format of plot synopsis and review. No film stills, but portrait drawings of the vampires associated with each film mark the transition from film to film. This makes sense for a self published book, as I assume this greatly reduced the reproduction costs.
For the casual reader interested in Hammer Vampire films, this is an inexpensive and light read. If it generates further interest in seeking out the films reviewed, so much the better.
