Oh my lord, this book was horrible. I got through 5% before I had to stop. And I'm asking for my money back. That's a new record. The writing and the plot were terrible. It saddens me to think of the dross that people must be reading to give this book a good review.Within the first few pages, Aaron, the MC, asks his sister (a "raging lesbian," by the way) if their parents are disappointed that both their kids "turned out" gay. IN THE NEXT PARAGRAPH, Aaron notes to himself that he's never come out to his parents and they both think he likes women. Um, OK, then what was that he asked his sister? I was scratching my head a bit, but soldiered on.
Apparently, Aaron is moving into a college dorm room as a freshman with THREE boxes. That's it. The description is pretty detailed that Aaron caries a box of pillows and sheets (since we've already been told what a wimp he is), while his "raging lesbian" sister carries a box of books, and Aaron goes back to the car to get the one remaining box, which must not contain much, since he can actually carry it. No backpack, no laptop, no posters, no suitcase full of clothes, no school supplies, no winter coat, no sports equipment. Just three boxes.
They arrive in the EMPTY dorm room. Empty. Aaron goes back for his last box, which sets up the meeting with Riley, the other MC, that has to be the basis for the most ridiculous "enemies" set up ever. OMG, you bumped into me in the hallway. I must hate you forever.
Later when Aaron returns to the EMPTY room, he notes that Riley brought so much more stuff than he did (Riley brought in one box and never left the room again) including game consoles. Where did all of Riley's many things come from? If he'd brought in boxes, the room wouldn't be empty.
I stopped reading then. I could tell that the plot inconsistencies were going to drive me insane. How could Aaron move to the dorms with only three boxes of stuff? How could Riley have "so much more stuff" when he only carried in one box (because the room was empty, remember?). None of it made sense and it was stupid and contrived. The author clearly couldn't keep track of what he was writing.
I won't be looking for any more books from this lazy, inconsistent author. If you want a great roommates to lovers book, read Heidi Cullinan's Love Lessons or the Amy Jo Cousins college books. SOOOOOO much better.

Love Me Hate Me edition by Hawke Oakley Romance eBooks Reviews
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
*NOTE* I'm pretty sure I caught the worst of the spoilers below, but be warned there may still be some. If you like to avoid spoilers, you might want to skip this review.
This book does not come across as Friends to Lovers for me. The MCs are roommates, but are at the very least antagonistic toward each other. Then book takes a dramatic turn from a fight (an actual literal fight with punches thrown) to a very quick turn to being in love. It was a bit too insta-love for my tastes.
The whole story is told from Aaron's POV, and I really had a hard time with Riley's switch from absolute jerk to perfect boyfriend. Maybe if we got more of Riley's POV it would have been more believable, but it just seemed a bit too much for me.
The timeline also felt off to me. The characters are in college and it specifically refers to semesters. Both MCs are in Philosophy during the first semester, and when they come back from "winter break" they are still in the same class (based on their conversation with the professor). The winter break suggests the end of the semester* to me, so based on this timeline, the MCs actually spend most of fall semester not liking each other just to fall in love in a couple of weeks.
*Every university I am familiar uses winter break at that end of fall semester and before spring semester. If you have another experience, this may not be as jarring for you.
I've been anticipating a new book from this author, and I'm so pleased with this latest addition. It's a casual, modern story, but it combines elements from the rest of his works too. Oakley's love for animals is clear on every page, for example.
To me, this story reads like more than just an enemies-to-lovers plot. It does an excellent job of setting up what happens in the story, and even touches on relevant modern issues, which made me very happy.
The blooming romance between Aaron and Riley made my heart literally flutter many times while reading the story, but that's nothing compared to how hot the steamy scenes were. Leave it to two college boys to know how to have some real fun. My favorite part is that at the end of the day, their relationship is super sweet and loving and everything I wanted to read. I really recommend it.
An excellent pick for Valentine's Day, also, now that I look at the calendar!
Wow! This book gripped me from start to finish. Definitely not your run of the mill "instalove" story.
The author has spun a tale of every emotion possible, before finally breaking through the barriers of two tortured hearts. I just loved this book, and have marked it as one of my best reads EVER...across all genres. Well done!
I will certainly be following this author in the future.
