This is an extremely valuable reference and in many respects a fun book to read. The journal references in the back of the book are actual words written day-by-day in the 1800s. So very interesting to read how events impacted on people in the South in those chaotic days.

I recommend this book to all who believe...and trust me, there are far too many, that all "plantations" were grand and opulent. This book is the real deal. It will demonstrate what happened when it was GIVEN to former slaves. It also should make people realize that if a worker is not well, treated, he/she cannot do any job. Thus, the planter is at a high disadvantage. The ordinary ones, such as Tombee are a prime example.
I am in no way supporting slavery. I will say that those of color brought to the southern states, were captured and aold back in AFRICA by their own kind.
Slavery does exist today....not in the form of the cotton and rice years. and what is actually being done to end it??
All cannot and should not believe it was begun by wealthy , mansion owning planters.

Some need to read Josephine Pinckney books also. They will provide insight on socio-economic ways.
Purchased several copies previously. Ordered it for a friend! The friend is enjoying it also and we would both recommend it to others. (I thought the book was out of publication)
Very informative. I bought it hoping to get a glimpse of what it was like for my family who lived in the old south and married into the Chaplin family. It did just that. Just the facts with no modern bias.
Will enjoy reading this historical book!
Wonderful experience!
Rosengarten's biography provides a fine context for this intimate and at times bizarre diary.
It’s a really unique book. It has helped me immensely with researching my family history, who were likely slaves owned by the Chaplin family.
