The Hampstead Mystery [1916] John R Watson Arthur J Rees Books

This mystery features a complex plot that puts forward several possible solutions. The victim is a well-respected judge who may have been shot by a disgruntled recipient of justice. However. as the police dig into the judge's personal life, they focus on his butler, a former convict. More investigation then shifts focus to the judge's love life, since he was quite a ladies' man. The police do make an arrest. The courtroom scenes which follow mean the story is told in lawyers' speeches and questions asked of witnesses. The author develops tension by conflict between Scotland Yard detectives and a private inquiry agent hired by the family. The police also have considerable infighting among themselves. Although not emotionally gripping the whodunnit factor keeps the reader engaged.

The Hampstead Mystery [1916] John R Watson Arthur J Rees Books Reviews

Old fashioned and beautifully written ~ If you are studying the English language , read this and other like him ~ A joy to read and highly recommended .
but only one is correct. Amazing deductions and you had all the facts, too. Fun trying to figure it out before the detective. Good luck.
The story kept me interested. I hated to put it down. Good story line. There were many suspects ,but hard to guess who'd done it!
The author doesn't like most of his characters and really doesn't develop any of them. But the crime is convoluted and holds your attention, except for the frequent repetition resulting from different characters going over the same ground. Interestingly, in the end all the competing sleuths are surprised by the killer.
I've read so many books since this one that I really only remember that it was very good.
LOVE Resurrected Press!
For the time this was written this one of the best mysteries I have read it had great characters and great descriptions and it kept me turning pages.
After introducing the Scotland Yard Inspector Chippenfield as a man who had solved many cases, the author then goes on to portray him negatively. He doesn't solve it. Neither does the crack detective Crewe, at first. I found all the detailed courtroom scenes too long. Yes, it does have a lot of twists and turns. The ending was very surprising. Nothing really prepared me for it. I don't think I'll read another of his books. It wasn't that enjoyable.
