Lovienthal Montague Spiritual Detective can only be described as a raunchy, dark-humored zombie thriller that breaks from the mold of traditional zombie books which typically feature a fearless lead character who always knows what to do, what to say, and how to handle every situation that may arise in the most tactful way possible.

A look into the life of Lovienthal Montague

Lovienthal Montague is overweight, balding, and has zero life skills. At age 50, he finds himself an unemployed, lifelong welfare recipient as well as a recreational drug user living in a rundown mobile home in Ocean View Trailer Park.

Often harassed and mocked by the neighborhood children, and loathed by society’s adults, Lovienthal on any other Friday morning would find himself with no good reason to even get out of bed (and thereby usually electing to sleep in and nurse his hangover), but this Friday is like no other, because today’s the day Lovienthal stops working for the man and starts working for himself. He has decided to become an entrepreneur and start up the Lovienthal Montague Spiritual Detective Agency which its mission statement is to teach people long caught up in society’s rat race how to become righteous again--only Lovienthal’s first day on the job doesn’t go exactly as planned.

After spending the afternoon putting up fliers and passing out business cards, Lovienthal and his friends (a very motley crew of society's rejects) find themselves suddenly thrown into a world where the dead would rather walk the streets and have him and his friends for dinner rather than just stay dead.

Lovienthal along with his trusty dog Chuckles, several friends (including his drug dealer), a few rednecks, and a couple of Laotian boys find that they are forced to put aside their petty differences and mistrust of each other and will have to work together if they’re ever going to make it out of the apocalypse alive.

In a world that makes each of them feel like they’re utterly alone, worthless, and a born loser, Lovienthal, and his friends, only through coming together as a team and caring for one another instead of just themselves, find that they’re each unique, courageous, and have self-worth, even if society doesn’t always see them that way. And, only united as a family, do they find lies their best chance at survival.

Lovienthal Montague Spiritual Detective also has alternating chapters which follow an Air Force commander’s investigation into the zombie outbreak.

Lovienthal Montague Spiritual Detective A Zombie Novel edition by Mark Kasniak Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The book begins with a deftly crafted, brilliantly graphic, gory action sequence, which introduces the zombies in a gruesome marathon of carnage, with Commander Brayzack, an Air force commander investigating the massacre.
Just as a zombie epidemic promises to break loose, with the threat of an imminent bloodbath looming large, Lovienthal walks into the plot, along with his dog Chuckles, and one is left wondering is he doing in a Zombie apocalypse.
Not the typical protagonist, the aging Lovienthal inadvertently finds himself in the middle of the zombie outbreak, and how he battles his way out (teaming up with a few friends) forms the rest of the story, along with Commander Brayzack's inquiries into the apocalypse.
Lovienthal is a refreshing change from the usual protagonist of a zombie novel; bumbling yet likable, adding a human touch to the gory zombie thriller, which is definitely not for the squeamish.
This is the first book by Mark Kasniak (Author) that I read, and I enjoyed it immensely. I would highly recommend it to all zombie enthusiasts, giving it a FIVE STAR PLUS rating.
Lovienthal Montague Spiritual Detective was unlike any apocalyptic/zombie novel I’ve read. The main character is anything but prepared for the end of the world and that’s what makes you root for him even harder (and especially for his awesome dog Chuckles). The story was laugh out loud funny at times and spooky as hell at other times. I really enjoyed how the author alternated between Lovienthal (and his motley crew) and Commander Brayzack’s POV as you get both the layperson and military perspective as the apocalypse unfolds. The story behind the origin of the virus was interesting (damn mosquitos) and the descriptions of the walking dead were fantastic. While there were a few tangents here and there the author did a great job of keeping the pace fast and the tension high during the many battles with the dead. I enjoyed the story and definitely will read more from this author.
This story begins with an unexplained outbreak of a virus at Air Force Base Camp Hero on Montauk Island. Several members of Dr. Ackerman's research team are found dead and Air Force Commander Brayzack is called in to investigate.
Meanwhile, Lovienthal Montague, a fat unemployed fifty year old, is hanging out at Ocean View Trailer Park, preparing for another weekend of partying. Events however, take an unexpected turn and Lovienthal is forced to flee the park along with an unlikely group; his friend, VQ, whose main interest is recreational drug use, an ageing ex groupie called Mary and two young boys who've previously spent their time tormenting Lovienthal. They're joined by the fearless McAllister brothers and their friend, Johnny.
As the group decide to head North, what follows is a gripping adventure. First, they must pass through the towns of Derby and Middleport where there are plenty of encounters with the undead. The writing here is so descriptive that I felt I was there with them, feeling their fear as they searched the local stores for supplies. There are gory scenes but these are never overdone and add to the sense of realism.
The writing is very imaginative and for me, there were several stand-out scenes. One is where we are introduced to a new character, Pamela, who, on her way to visit a friend, has stopped for a massage at a spa. Left alone, she begins to be aware of screams and shouts coming from outside. There is so much tension here. Will she escape? Another scene is where VQ goes back to fetch his bag of pills. I also enjoyed the scenarios in the school gymnasium and on the fortified school bus. All these are so well portrayed.
The characters are all well developed and I liked the interaction between them and their growing dependency on each other. In order to survive they must help one another to overcome many obstacles. I liked Mary, who, as well as caring for the two boys, also has genuine feelings for Lovienthal. By the end of the book, she discovers he's much to him than a fat, lazy slob.
A secondary plot follows Commander Brayzack and his investigation into the virus. He's an interesting character, concerned with doing his duty and what he believes to be right, he's also desperate to locate his family. The description of Operation New England Liberty is chilling.
This would have been an easy five star rating for me if it hadn't been for the typos. Unfortunately, there were so many that they became distracting. However, this is something that can easily be sorted out by an edit.
I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more about Lovienthal. A fast paced, roller coaster of a read and one which I found difficult to put down.
I don’t usually read zombie books, so was surprised that this one held my attention so well. The story is interesting, starting with a viral outbreak, and vacillates between government officials trying to contain and deal with it, to your below-average-joe Loventhial – an unemployed, aging, trailer park dweller and his assembly of friends – trying to survive. The story is told well (had me on the edge of my seat), and comes together nicely in the end. The description of the zombies is detailed and not for the squeamish of heart. A must read for any zombie lover!
